Defiance swept at Cornerstone to start weekend in Grand Rapids
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Defiance Yellow returned to the court after six days off and were knocked off by the Cornerstone Golden Eagles in three sets (18-25, 18-25, 17-25).
The Yellow Jackets (14-14, 7-9 WHAC) dropped their third straight match as the Golden Eagles (19-6, 11-4 WHAC) sweep the season series over DC.
The first set was competitive throughout with Defiance trailing by two, 20-18. However, Cornerstone closed out the set on a five point rally. DC hung around in the second as well and trailed by two at 14-12 before the Golden Eagles scored four in a row to create a gap to take control of the set. With their backs against the wall in the third, Defiance scored the first three points before Cornerstone scored on 7 of 8 volleys and later had a 7-point streak to lead 14-6.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Chaney Brodbeck (13) and Sarah Hirschy (12) led the team in kills for the night.
- Haley Hammer led Defiance in assists with 30 and digs with 10.
- As a team, the Yellow Jackets hit .130 for the match while the Golden Eagles converted 29 percent of their attacks into points.
- The Golden Eagles were all over the nets and knocked down 10 blocks compared to DC's five.

Defiance stays on the road in Grand Rapids and competes at Aquinas tomorrow afternoon. The first serve between the Yellow Jackets and Saints is scheduled for 2 p.m.
