Defiance swept at home by Cornerstone
DEFIANCE, Ohio – Facing another strong test on their home court, the Defiance Yellow Jackets were defeated in straight sets (18-28, 10-25, 22-25) by the Cornerstone Golden Eagles at the Karl H. Weaner Center on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets (12-8, 5-3 WHAC) have lost their last three against tough competition, including nationally-recognized Aquinas and Cornerstone (14-3, 6-1 WHAC) at home this weekend.
The two squads went toe-to-toe in the first and third sets that saw the Golden Eagles outlast the Jackets for the closing points. Defiance trailed by just one point at 17-16 in the first before Cornerstone won the next 8 of 10 points. The Jackets played their best during the beginning of set three, opening a 5-0 lead and later had a 19-15 advantage. Cornerstone rallied to take the lead and finished the match with a close 25-22 third set.
The second set was all Cornerstone, winning 25-10. The Golden Eagles converted 14 kills and did not commit an attack error in the second set to fuel the lopsided set.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Defiance was led by Gabby Rodriguez with eight kills followed by Jaelyn Tomoletz with seven.
- Haley Hammer led the passing game with 11 assists.
- Chaney Brodbeck topped the list defensively with seven digs followed by Kylie Yoder with six.
- As a team, Defiance converted 28 kills and hit .167 as a team.
- Cornerstone swatted the ball at a .402 rate with 45 total kills in the match.

Defiance gets back on the court on Wednesday night with a trip to Madonna. First serve against the Crusaders is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena.
