Yellow Jackets sweep Rochester Christian on Friday
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance Yellow Jackets secured a home victory on Friday night by taking down the Rochester Christian Warriors in straight sets (31-29, 25-19, 25-20) in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action at the Weaner Center.
The Yellow Jackets (5-13, 3-8 WHAC) had to endure another overtime set to start the match with a 31-29 win in the first set, the team's third set in the last four matches to go beyond 25 points. The 31-point opening set was also the longest set for the program during its first season of action. Defiance played from behind early before taking the upper hand halfway through the first, but could not close out the Warriors (0-16, 0-12 WHAC). Both squads held set points multiple times before a Zack Baker kill and a setting error by RCU closed the lengthy set to start the night.
DC was more convincing in the next two sets, pulling ahead 16-10 in the second and rebounding from an 8-7 hole in the third for clinch the match. Rochester Christian hung around during the third set, forcing 11 ties before the Jackets slammed the door shut with 6 of the last 8 points to finish the match.
Defiance's attack was led by Thaddeus Setla and Matthew Schulte with 11 and 10 kills apiece. Adam Sutton collected 21 assists and also led the Jackets with 8 digs. As a team, Defiance racked up 9 blocks on the night with Schulte, Zander Culbertson and reigning WHAC Defender of the Week Quinn Silverman adding up to 3 total blocks each. The Yellow Jackets committed 35 total errors in the match, 17 in the attack game, while RCU committed 42. The Jackets also swung at a .224 clip with 36 kills.
