Jackets still knocking on the door after splitting pair at Siena Heights
ADRIAN, Mich. - The Defiance Yellow Jackets continue to march into the conference tournament conversation after a 9-5 win and 4-3 loss against the Siena Heights Saints at the SHU Baseball Diamond on Tuesday.
The Yellow Jackets (12-23, 5-9 WHAC) equaled last season's conference victories in Tuesday's win while also nabbing a win against the fourth different team that swept DC last season.
Game 1 - Defiance 9, Siena Heights 5
Despite building a 3-0 lead, Defiance needed a comeback to capture the first game of the day. Connor Gephart knocked in the first 2 runs of the game and Dominic Jarjis came through with a 2-out RBI single in the third to back starting pitcher Bradyn Shaw (Win, 3-4). Shaw ran into some trouble in the third, allowing 4 runs. Siena Heights used a single and a walk to set up an RBI single, followed by a game-tying 2-run double and a 2-out error to take the lead. DC's offense helped their pitch in the next frame with a 3-run rally to regain the lead. After Siena Heights added an unearned run in the fourth, Shaw helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly in the sixth as DC went on to post 3 insurance runs. Shaw pitched 5 innings before giving way to Devin Delzeith, who pitched 2 scoreless innings to close out the win.
Game 2 - Siena Heights 4, Defiance 3
Two seniors drove home all 3 runs in the second game but the Yellow Jackets stranded 11 runners in a one-run defeat in the second ballgame. Anthony Silvera Jr.'s 2-run double to tie the game 2-2 in the fourth, and Elisa Marquez extended the put DC in the lead, 3-2, with a single to center in the sixth. DC was held to just 1 hit the rest of the ballgame against the Saints' bullpen. Siena Heights manufactured single runs in the seventh and eighth innings with the help of leadoff baserunners and stolen bases in each inning. Brez Zipfel worked a season-high 6 innings and held the Saints to 3 runs while dodging 5 walks with 7 strikeouts, also a season-best. Colin Danek (Loss, 0-2) took a tough-luck loss while the Jackets left the tying run on third base in the ninth.
