DEFIANCE, Ohio – Kelsey Ferguson has been voted by the Defiance College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as the first winner of the SAAC Sportsmanship Award for the 2010-2011 year. The award is part of the NCAA's Respect Campaign and will be announced every two weeks throughout the remainder of the year.
Student-athletes are nominated for the honor by their head coach and the winner is determined by the vote of the Defiance College SAAC members. To be nominated, the student-athlete must be involved in an in-season sport and must consistently demonstrate good sportsmanship throughout their season.
Ferguson was nominated by volleyball head coach, David Kwan, who described her as one of the most respectful and mature student-athletes he has ever met. "She will always shake hands with the officials after each match and is the first to show support for her teammates," Kwan stated.
Ferguson is an active member of numerous campus organizations, including being an athletic training major and a four-year letterwinner on the DC volleyball squad. Ferguson currently leads the Yellow Jackets with 84 sets played and 442 assists from her setter position.
