DC Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches to Complete Kilt Classic

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Defiance College volleyball team ended its showing at the 2010 Wooster Kilt Classic with a five-set victory against Capital, before falling in straight sets to the host Wooster squad to round out a 2-2 effort at the tournament.

DC began the day with a thrilling 19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 28-26, 15-13 win over Capital (6-8). The Jackets were led by senior setter, Kelsey Ferguson, who tossed up 47 assists . Chelsea Ludeman was the primary recipient with 19 kills, while Sara Porter added 14 and Marlea Rolander collected seven. Porter also charged the defense with 18 digs, while Heather Bradshaw scooped up 15.

The Jackets fell short in the finale however, as Wooster (8-6) handed them a 25-20, 25-15, 25-17 defeat. Bradshaw turned in another solid performance on defense with 14 digs, while Brunsman and Ferguson combined for 25 assists and Marlea Rolander chipped in eight kills to secure a spot on the Kilt Classic All-Tournament Team.

Defiance (4-9) will open its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule on Wednesday, when it travels to North Manchester, Ind., to take on the Manchester Spartans (2-8) at 7:00 pm.

The Jackets will then head west to Santa Cruz, Calif., to compete in the UC Santa Cruz Tournament on September 24 and 25.
