Women’s’ Soccer Ends in a 2-2 Draw at Bluffton

BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Yellow Jackets fell behind, 2-0, on two own goals in the first half, but rallied to outscore Bluffton by two goals in the second half and force overtime. Neither team would score through two overtime periods, as the teams finished in a 2-2 draw after 110 minutes of play. 

The Beavers jumped out to an early lead when a loose ball from a Bluffton corner kick deflected off a DC defender and into the net at the 11:53 mark of the first period. Bluffton's lead was extended in the 36th minute on DC's second own goal of the game, and the Jackets went into halftime with a two-goal deficit.

Following the break, the Lady Jackets wasted little time getting themselves back into the game. DC's Janelle Doenges scored from the top of the box off of an assist from Karly Smith to bring Defiance within one goal in the third minute of the second half. Fifteen minutes later, Alexandra Johnson set up Katie Heitkamp for her second goal of the season to even the score at two goals apiece.

Both teams went scoreless through twenty minutes of overtime play to keep the draw intact. Kelly Coble recorded six saves in goal for Defiance to bump her conference-high saves total up to 119 for the season.

The Lady Jackets (4-8-4, 2-4-2 HCAC) will return home to face Rose-Hulman (6-11, 3-4 HCAC) for Senior Day on Saturday, October 30, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Seniors Melissa Alston, Cherilyn Borkholder and Kelly Coble will be honored at halftime, in their final game with the Defiance College soccer program.
