Jackets send off seniors and close season on Saturday
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance Yellow Jackets' women's basketball season came to a close on Saturday with a 71-50 loss to the Aquinas Saints at the Karl H. Weaner Center.
Seniors Mone'a McElroy and Ali Mowen each played in their last home game for DC and bookended the first half with big buckets. McElroy scored the first points of the game with a strong take to the basket to give DC a 2-0 lead while Mowen nailed a 3-pointer to finish the first half. McElroy closed with 8 points on 4 rebounds while Mowen posted 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a pair of steals. Both seniors logged a pair of treys for DC.
Aquinas built a 31-20 lead by halftime while the second half was even in scoring at 30-30. The Saints shot 43 percent while DC landed 27 percent of their attempts, which included a season-high 31 3-point attempts. Turnovers and rebounds were near even as well with DC outrebounding the Saints 49-48 and committing 21 turnovers to 19.
Lorena Caparros impressed on both ends of the floor for Defiance, posting her second double-double of the year with 10 points and a season-high 13 boards. She also swiped 4 steals. DC also had double-figure scorers in Jourdyn Wynn and Kayla Houston with 10 points each.
DC lost its last 21 games of the season, finishing 3-25 and 0-22 in WHAC competition. The Saints closed the regular season 19-8 and 17-5 in the WHAC before beginning WHAC Tournament action next week.
