Strong second half not enough for Yellow Jackets on Saturday
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance Yellow Jackets were a different team after Saturday's halftime break but were unable to come all the way back in a 69-46 loss to the Siena Heights Saints.
Despite trailing 38-12 at the half, the Yellow Jackets (3-17, 0-14 WHAC) won the second half, 34-31. The Saints (8-9, 7-7 WHAC) earned their third straight win in their last visit to DC.
Shooting defined the first half with the Yellow Jackets going 2-for-29 from the field compared to 14-for-26 by Siena Heights. Kayla Houston contributed four free throws early to keep DC within 7-4, and Shaunie Little added the lone field goal of the opening quarter to make the score 12-6. The Saints then took off on a 14-0 run until Ali Mowen added a pair of free throws after a Siena Heights technical foul. The Jackets were held without a field goal in the second quarter until 16 seconds left in the half when Jourdyn Wynn tacked on a layup.
Wynn was a factor for the Jackets all afternoon, posting a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double, which was her third of the season. Houston also notched a double-figure game with 12 points, 8 of which came in the second half.
Siena Heights closed the game shooting 50 percent and were led by Lauren DeWolf's 20 points.
