Caparros wins WHAC Defensive Player of the Week after record performance
DEFIANCE, Ohio - Defiance College junior guard Lorena Caparros was named WHAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week for her part in the Yellow Jackets' lockdown weekend and 2-1 week.
In a three-game stretch that saw Defiance average 41 forced turnovers per game, Caparros pried away a total of 22 steals. Defiance also had two other defenders reach 20 steals in the week by Shaunie Little (23) and Taylor Haynes (20). What set Caparros apart was her steal total in Friday's win against Grace Christian, in which he set the DC women's basketball program single-game record with 14 steals. The previous Defiance record was 12 steals by Lea Barrera on Jan. 6, 2001 against Bluffton. In that game, DC forced 54 turnovers and scored 66 of 111 points off of those takeaways. Caparros also averaged 13.7 points for the week with a high of 17, pulled in 7 rebounds with 5 on the defensive end, and assisted on 8 other baskets.
The award is the first of her career for Caparros and the first Player of the Week Award of the season for DC women's basketball.
