Jackets fall in conference opener at Siena Heights
ADRIAN, Mich. – The Defiance Yellow Jackets suffered their first setback of the season with a 75-56 loss at Siena Heights on Monday.
The Yellow Jackets (1-1) shot 34 percent while the Saints (1-0) hit 44 percent of their attempts and dominated the glass with 49 rebounds. Siena Heights secured 17 offensive rebounds and scored 17 second-chance points in the 19-point victory.
Defiance opened the game with a 5-4 lead but Siena Heights used a 10-2 run to take control halfway through the first quarter. In the second quarter, Taylor Haynes started the period with a quick bucket but Siena Heights responded with the next 8 points to post their largest lead of the half to 15. Both teams struggled to score over the next 2:30 until Defiance went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to 8 points with free throws by Shaunie Little, a layup by Haynes and a trey by Morgan Crowe.
In the third, the two teams played to a 13-13 tie halfway through the quarter before Siena Heights caught fire, finishing with a 30-point quarter that included a 13-0 run. The lead got as large as 27 in the last moments of the third before DC closed the gap in fourth by doubling up the Siena Heights 16-8.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Shaunie Little led Defiance in scoring for the second straight game, leading the way with 11 points. She also chipped in four assists, four steals and four rebounds.
- Kayla Houston got her first career start for Defiance and joined Little in double figures with 10 points.
- Taylor Haynes reached double-digits for the first time this season with 10 points before fouling out.
- Defiance had a tough night shooting outside the arc, going 3-for-19 wiht single makes by Ali Mowen, Morgan Crowe and Mone'a McElroy.
- The Jackets were an efficient 11-for-15 at the free throw line.
- Siena Heights' Lauren DeWolf led all scorers with 27 points and Jam Thigpen had a double-double with 18 points and 21 rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets travel to the University of the Cumberlands at the end of the week to compete in the Patriots Classic. DC will play the host #25 Cumberlands on Thursday at 4 p.m. and will play #RV Southeastern on Friday at 1 p.m.
