DEFIANCE, Ohio – Both the women's and men's basketball teams at Defiance College have completed their 2020-21 regular seasons and are now preparing to compete in their respective Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Opening-round tournament play begins this weekend at various campus sites.
In blind draws, the Defiance women got the No. 9 seed in their tournament while the men are the No. 6 seed in their championship event.
On the women's side, the Yellow Jackets are scheduled to play a first-round game at No. 8 seed Anderson University this Friday. Tipoff in Anderson, Indiana, is set for 7 p.m.
DC and Anderson were slated to meet twice during the regular season, on Jan. 29 and 30, but those contests were canceled. Both squads are on two-game losing streaks as Defiance enters the tournament with a 2-8 overall record while AU is 5-6. The winner of Friday's matchup moves on to face top seed Bluffton University on the road next Wednesday, March 3.
In the men's tournament, the Yellow Jackets are set to return to action after not playing a game since beating Anderson, 87-71, on Jan. 30. DC is scheduled to take the court at No. 3 seed Hanover College in the quarterfinal round next Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Hanover, Indiana.
Defiance and Hanover were not scheduled to play each other during the 2020-21 season. The Yellow Jackets stand at 1-5 overall while HC is 7-4 after winning its last three contests. Whoever prevails next Wednesday advances to the semifinal round next weekend.
