LEXINGTON, Ky. – Courtney Schmersal would have preferred to do it in a winning effort, but nonetheless, the senior sharpshooter tied DC’s all-time record for three-point field goals made in a career, hitting three against the Pioneers to bump her career total up to 142. Defiance fell, 104-64, in the game.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Courtney Schmersal would have preferred to do it in a winning effort, but nonetheless, the senior sharpshooter tied DC's all-time record for three-point field goals made in a career, hitting three against the Pioneers to bump her career total up to 142. Defiance fell, 104-64, in the game.
Schmersal hit all three of her longballs in a span of two minutes and seven seconds during the second half, helping the Jackets shave seven points off of their deficit, but it was not nearly enough for a DC squad that shot just 27.4 percent from the field. The 27.4 percent clip marks the team's third-lowest of the season, and comes on the heels of four-straight contests with a field-goal percentage north of 40.
Transylvania posted a season-high 58 rebounds in the game while Defiance came up with just 35 boards, marking the Jackets' worst rebounding margin of the season at negative 23. The Pioneers also posted their second-highest field goal percentage of the season at 55.1 percent, thanks in large part to their 54-18 advantage on points in the paint.
Schmersal tied freshman guard, Maggie Neanen, with a team-high nine points in the game. Neanen went one-of-one from beyond the arc and four-of-four from the charity stripe for her career-high nine-point game.
The Lady Jackets (9-12; 7-7 HCAC) maintain a three-game lead over Bluffton (8-12; 5-8 HCAC) for fifth place in the conference despite the loss, and will play in their fourth-straight road game on Wednesday, Feb. 9, with a 7:30 p.m. tilt at winless Earlham College.
