DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College softball suffered losses of 16-3 and 6-1 to the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils in the final slate of regular-season games for the Yellow Jackets on Saturday at Defiance High School.
The Yellow Jackets closed the campaign at 13-23 and 8-12 in the WHAC while awaiting the remaining results of the weekend to decide the final spots in next week's WHAC Tournament. After DC's games on Saturday, DC holds the eighth and final spot with other teams still to play on Sunday and Monday. Between Saturday's games, Defiance Softball recognized its four seniors playing their final home games: Anna Emswiler, Kaylee Heath, Ali Mowen, and Morgan Scott.
Game 1 - Lawrence Tech 16, Defiance 3 (6 innings)
After Madelyn Hopper worked around a pair of runners for a scoreless first, Lawrence Tech went on to score in each of the remaining innings while facing two other DC pitchers. After the Blue Devils built a 9-1 lead, Morgan Scott's solo home run stood as the Jackets' lone run until Catherine Trebley slugged a 2-run blast in the fifth to keep the game alive for another inning. Lawrence Tech responded with a 7-run sixth to factor in the run rule.
Game 2 - Lawrence Tech 6, Defiance 1
Sarah Basket's 3-run homer in the second inning was all the offense the Blue Devils needed to take the sweep. After making Taighen Zipfel pay for two walks in the second, she stood her ground in the third by getting out of a bases-loaded, no out jam by surrendering just one additional run. The Yellow Jackets were no-hit through the first five innings and an Anna Emswiler walk was the baserunner for DC until Avery Roever plugged a single up the middle in the sixth. Roever advanced to third on a pair of groundouts and came in to score when Kaylee Heath doubled over the right fielder's head in the sixth. The Blue Devils got that run back and added another with a pair of RBI doubles in the seventh before working around a lead-off single by Scott in DC's half of the inning.
