DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance Yellow Jackets suffered two losses of 18-2 and 4-0 to the 3rd-ranked Madonna Crusaders in Friday's Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader at Defiance High School.
The Yellow Jackets (13-21, 8-10 WHAC) dropped their sixth straight with two games to play to attempt to secure their place in next week's WHAC Tournament.
Game 1 - Madonna 18, Defiance 2
The Crusaders loaded the bases in the first and Taighen Zipfel came a wild pitch away from escaping the inning without any damage. Defiance had a chance to even the score in their half of the first after a 2-out, bloop single by Catherine Trebley put Ali Mowen on third base but the Jackets left both runners aboard. In the second, Madonna added a second run before Ashley Rosiewicz rocked her 11th homer of the season with a 3-run shot over the left field fence. While holding the Yellow Jacket hitters to just two hits after Mowen's first inning single, the Crusaders piled up 13 more runs to finish the first contest after 5 innings. Defiance spoiled the shutout on Paige Stewart's single to center during the fifth.
Game 2 - Madonna 4, Defiance 0
Madelyn Hopper quieted the Madonna offense by holding the Crusaders to 4 runs in the second ballgame. Madonna scratched across a 2-out run in the first on an infield hit before Hopper posted three straight scoreless innings, which included a bases-loaded spot in the fourth with no outs. The visitors extended their lead in the fifth with a pair of runs plus another insurance run in the seventh. DC's best offensive threat came in the second inning when Kaylee Heath started the inning with a single followed by a double from Allison Stinson but the Crusaders wiggled out of the jam. Catherine Trebley's single in the fourth caused Madonna to make a pitching change while reliever Anna Battagin tossed four one-hit innings to complete the sweep.
