ROCKFORD, Mich. - The weekend in Michigan ended with an 0-4 mark for the Defiance Yellow Jackets after losses of 5-4 and 7-4 to the Aquinas Saints on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets (13-19, 8-8 WHAC) dropped to .500 in conference play with 4 games remaining on their conference schedule, gripping to 7th place in the WHAC standings. The Saints (22-14, 4-10 WHAC) hold the 9th spot in the league and trail Defiance by 4 games with 6 left on the docket.
Game 1 - Aquinas 5, Definace 4
The Yellow Jackets and Saints scored all 9 runs during the first four innings before pitching decided the rest of the contest. DC pushed the first run of the game across but the Saints grabbed 3 runs to take the lead. Emma Linn delivred a sacrifice fly in the second and a bases-loaded walk in third that tied the game, but Defiance wasn't able to come through with the big hit with the bases full and one out. Aquinas went on to break the 4-4 tie in the fifth on a 2-out single. DC pitcher Taighen Zipfel shouldered all 5 runs and walked 5 prior to 2 scoreless innings pitched by Devyn Hamilton.
Game 2 - Aquinas 7, Defiance 4
The second contest was tied 4-4 halfway through the third inning, just like the first game. However, a 2-run third for the Saints proved to be the difference. Morgan Scott started a Defiance rally in the third when her solo home run closed a 3-run gap to make the score 4-2. Later that inning, Anna Emswiler evened the score with a 2-run single. Hamilton took over in the circle during the third after a 2-inning start by Emma Rodgers that yielded just 1 earned run. Aquinas worked 3 singles and a walk to regain the lead and added an extra run in the fifth. Emswiler and Zipfel each logged hits for DC in the sixth as the team's last credible threat of the day while Aquinas' Addy Buchin finished a complete game for the win.
