GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Defiance Yellow Jackets were defeated twice on Friday afternoon, 8-5 and 8-0, by the Cornerstone Golden Eagles in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action at the CU Softball Field.
The Yellow Jackets (13-17, 8-6 WHAC) were dealt their first doubleheader sweep in conference action this season while the Golden Eagles (19-14, 10-6 WHAC) boosted their winning streak to 6 straight games.
Game 1 - Cornerstone 8, Defiance 5
Cornerstone was fueled by one big inning to capture the opening contest with a 5-run third frame. The Golden Eagles picked up a pair in the second and DC answered with a 2-run homer in the third by Catherine Trebley. Cornerstone slugged their way back into the lead after a leadoff single and a 2-run shot to start the third frame, but tacked on 3 more runs beginning with a walk and an error. The home squad added another run to their lead in the fourth before the Jackets came to life again in the fifth. Morgan Scott ignited the inning with a 1-out double and scored following an error on a batted ball by Kaylee Heath. With 2 outs in the same inning, Madison Guggenbiller smacked her second home run of the season. Defiance kept finding ways on base in the closing innings but stranded 7 over the last 3 innings, including the bases loaded in the seventh.
Game 2 - Cornerstone 8, Defiance 0 (5 innings)
The Yellow Jackets were no-hit by Cornerstone's Kara Sandberg in a run-rule shortened game to finish the day. The Golden Eagles scored in all 5 innings and rattled off 10 hits. Through the first three innings, Cornerstone used a sacrifice fly, an RBI groundout and a pair of RBI singles to build a 4-0 lead before a pair of doubles created 3 more runs in the fourth. In the fifth, DC recorded just one out before Cornerstone pushed the 8th run of the day across to close the action. In the circle, Sandberg issued 3 walks to DC hitters starting with 2 in the first inning to immediately break up the perfect game. After a leadoff walk to start the third, she retired the final 9 DC hitters to preserve the no-hitter.
