SOUTH CHARLESTON, W. Va. - On its first road trip of the season, Defiance College headed down to South Charleston, West Virginia for a Friday clash with the Rio Grande Red Storm at Little Creek Park. The Red and Black took the series 2-0 behind a strong-hitting effort.
Madelynn Vickers made her pitching debut to start the game the first game of the series. In its first two at-bats, Rio Grande earned four hits, contributing to five RBI's. Defiance (0-4) was able to send out its hitters as both innings' final out came from caught pop ups to second and third base, respectively.
At the bottom of the third, after two walks, Devyn Hamilton came in for Vickers on the mound, however, two hits from the Red Storm (6-3) and a fielding error brought in three runs, Rio Grande leading 8-0 at the top of the fourth. With no scoring through the fourth, Defiance's Anika Craft singled with its first hit of the day, but a fly out and ground out ended the game after five.
The Jackets struggled on offense with one hit on 15 at-bats. Vickers took the loss for Defiance allowing four hits and five walks.
