Powerlifting shows strength in first-ever competition at USAPL Midwest Regionals
APPLETON, Wisc. - The new Defiance College powerlifting team competed in the program's first-ever event over the weekend by traveling to Wisconsin for the USAPL Midwest Regionals at Fox Cities Expo Center.
Competing in an open-format competition, Defiance garnered four medalist finishes and two first-place finishes in their respective divisions. Earning first-place medals for Defiance were Dominic Bingham in the Men's Teen III 75kg division in addition to Mikayla Twum in the Women's Teen III 90kg class. Bingham cleared a total of 1311 pounds with a 457 lb. squat, 314 lb. bench and 540-lb. deadlift. For Twum, she benched 154, squatted 314 and boosted a 435-pound deadlift for a 903-pound total to earn gold.
In addition to the two top finishers, Defiance also posted two more podium finishes. Rayne Cook logged a second-place finish in the Women's Teen III 100+kg division. Cook benched 204, squtted 275 and posted a 253-pound deadlift for a 733 total. In the Men's Teen III 75kg division, Griffin Trevino cleared 1000 pounds for a third-place finish. He squatted 396, benched 231 and deadlift 462 for a 1063 total.
Zachariah Burroughs (Men's Teen III 110kg) and Masen Switzer (Men's Junior 90kg) also competed for Defiance and had strong showings in their debut competition. Burroughs just missed the podium at 1240 pounds (446 lb squat, 325 bench, 468 deadlift). Switzer was the lone Yellow Jacket competing above the Teen levels but posted a team-high 1405 pounds for his three lifts despite an eighth-place finish.
