Jackets beat in straight sets by Cornerstone
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance Yellow Jackets dropped a straight-set decision to the Cornerstone Golden Eagles (25-19, 25-18, 25-17) in Friday's WHAC men's volleyball action at the Weaner Center.
A very competitive first set saw the two sides tied 16-16 before Cornerstone pulled away to score 4 straight points, gaining momentum to capture the opening set of the night. Errors stacked up quickly on the two sides, which combined for 25 total errors in the first set. In the second, DC enjoyed a strong start with kills by Matthew Schulte and Thaddeus Setla, helping build a 5-2 lead. The Golden Eagles fought back to even the score 7-7 and tilted an 11-10 lead into an 18-12 advantage by taking 7 of 9 volleys. Cornerstone jumped out to a 4-0 and eventually 9-3 lead before the Yellow Jackets rallied for 4 straight points. DC clawed back to within 3 points but the Golden Eagles closed out the match with 6 of the last 7 points of the evening.
The Yellow Jackets hit below .000 for the match at -.069 (26 attack errors to 20 kills) while Cornerstone swung at a respectable .271 clip. A trio of Jackets recorded a team-high 4 kills in Kaden Burgeson, Thaddeus Setla, and Zack Baker. Oniel Alvarez had a match-high 13 digs.
