Svanberg's hat trick gives men's soccer third consecutive win

Junior captain Noah Svanberg netted the first hat trick for the Defiance men's soccer program since 2009 on Sunday afternoon in a 4-1 win over Hiram.

Inside The Numbers

• Svanberg scored his first goal in the 22nd minute to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Noah Howdeshell provided the assist, the first of his career.
• Svanberg added his second goal in the 58th minute with junior Joshua Maurer recording the first assist of his Defiance career.
• In the 76th minute, Svanberg completed the hat trick to extend the lead to 3-0.
• In the 88th minute, Isaac Opoku converted a penalty kick to put Hiram on the scoreboard
• Freshman Jack Stanoikovich scored the final Defiance goal in the 89th minute to close out the game. The goal was the first of his career.
• Junior Orry Killam made eight stops in 90 minutes in goal to earn the win.
• Shelby Edwards played all 90 minutes in goal for Hiram and made three saves

The Difference

• Despite being outshot 23-14, Defiance was made to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.
• Killam and the Defiance defense were able to withstand the pressure from the Terriers and kept them off the scoreboard for almost the entire game.
• Svanberg took five shots in the contest and all three that were on goal found the back of the neck.
