Theissler, Walford lead Jackets at Island Pointe
KODAK, Tenn. – The Defiance College men's golf team continued their week in Eastern Tennessee by co-hosting the Island Pointe Intercollegiate at Island Pointe Golf Club alongside the women's program on Thursday and Friday.
On the team leaderboard, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College used a second-round 300 to jump into first place and beat Indiana Tech by six strokes. The Yellow Jackets fielded two teams with eighth-place and 12th-place finishes. DC's A team completed the two-day tournament with rounds of 331 and 334 for a 665 total. The B team started out with a 374 and finished at 771 for the tournament.
Sam Theissler led the Yellow Jackets with a 16th-place finish with a two-day total of 160. He posted a team-best round of 75 to open the tournament and was just six shots off the lead in a tie for third. During his first round, he had a birdie on the fourth and a run of eight straight pars.
Jordan Walford led the A Team in the second round with a 79 to finish in the top 20 with a 161 total over the two-day event. He picked up single birdies in each round. Brendan Garvin tied his career-low round of 81 in Round 1, followed by a solid 82 in the second round for a 24th-place finish.
Alex Moritz was the top finisher on the B Team, with a two-round total of 175, followed by rounds of 84 and 91. Zach Palmer and Sam Boyles followed closely behind with 181 and 182 thanks to rounds under 90 on Friday, giving the A Team five golfers under 90 for the second round.
Rounding out the performances for Team B, Zach Canterbury led the squad during the second round with an even round of 90 that included a birdie on the fifth. His tournament total was 192. Cooper Sloan followed with a 198 over the tournament highlighted by a 96 on Thursday. Brodee McMahan posted twin 114 round for a 228. Bretton Basford shot 92 on Thursday but did not play the second round.
Indiana Tech's Spencer Keller finished even-par for the tournament with a 69 and 75 for 144, winning by three strokes for medalist honors.
