Goecke Leads Defiance at Spiess Memorial
WAUSEON, Ohio – Sophomore Alex Goecke shot a 74 to lead the Defiance College men’s golf team at the 2009 Jon Spiess Memorial Tournament on Tuesday.
WAUSEON, Ohio – Sophomore Alex Goecke shot a 74 to lead the Defiance College men's golf team at the 2009 Jon Spiess Memorial Tournament on Tuesday. Goecke placed fifth to earn a spot on the all-tournament squad and led DC to a fifth-place showing in the eight-team event.
Goecke was joined near the top of the standing by freshman Conor Totzke, who carded a 77 to end in a tie for 15th. Sophomore Jared James finished one stroke back and in a tie for 21st, while sophomore Brian Jones shot an 82 and freshman Jon Garcia finished with a 93.
Northwestern Ohio tied with Rochester atop the team standings with a 299, Trine (304) finished third and saw its 'B' squad (308) finish fourth and just three strokes ahead of Defiance (311). Olivet (312) ended sixth and was followed by Northwestern Ohio's 'B' team (314) and Urbana (339).
Jason Klaus of Northwestern Ohio won the individual tournament with a 69 to edge Trine's Grant Bolin by a single shot. Rochester's Brad Hunt turned in a 72 to round out the tightly contested top three.
Defiance will host the DC Fall Invitational on Sunday, September 20. Action is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am at the Kettenring Country Club.
