Angstmann named WHAC Defensive Player of the Week
DEFIANCE, Ohio - Defiance College sophomore men's basketball player Evan Angstmann (St. Mary's, Ohio/St. Mary's Memorial) was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, the conference announced on Monday.
Angstmann, who led the team this season in scoring at 15.4 points per game and 3-point shooting with 78 makes in 27 games, posted career numbers on the defensive side of the ball to help the Yellow Jackets to a 1-1 week against Cleary and Aquinas. In Wednesday's 4-point loss to the Cougars, Angstmann posted a career-high 13 rebounds with 11 coming on the defensive glass. He also came away with 2 steals and a block in the game. Then in Saturday's season finale, the 6-foot-7 sophomore collected 20 rebounds to account for the most rebounds by a DC men's basketball player since Chad Kahle's 21-rebound effort on Dec. 4, 1999, which was the 10th 20-plus rebound performance in program history. Angstmann also set a single-game career high with 4 blocked shots in DC's win over the Saints.
Angstmann's weekly totals included a 17.0 points per game scoring average, 4 total 3-pointers, 16.5 rebounds per game, 3 steals and 5 blocked shots.
This week's WHAC Defensive Player of the Week Award is the second time a Yellow Jackets player has won the award this season, joining fellow sophomore Carter Sudhoff for the fifth week of the season. Angstmann and Sudhoff are the only two players to win a weekly award in men's basketball since the team joined the conference.
After winning the conference's weekly award, Angstmann is now eligible for NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week, which will be announced on Tuesday.
