Angstmann hits five treys, Brown logs double-double in loss to Lourdes
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance Yellow Jackets suffered a 20-point loss on Saturday afternoon to the Lourdes Gray Wolves at the Karl H. Weaner Center, snapping a three-game winning streak on their home floor.
The Yellow Jackets (3-5, 1-2 WHAC) had their lowest shooting percentage of the year at 29.3 percent but hit a season-high seven 3-pointers led by five from freshman Evan Angstmann. The Gray Wolves (6-0, 2-0 WHAC) retained their standing as the last unbeaten team in the WHAC with their sixth straight win to start the year.
The first half started sloppy with neither team being able to put the ball in the basket consistently with just 19 combined points over the first eight minutes. The mistakes were more costly for the Yellow Jackets however as they had six turnovers in the first 11 minutes of play, letting the Gray Wolves get free chances frequently. Lourdes took control with a 16-1 run, going from down 10-9 to leading 25-11 while Defiance did not make a bucket for nearly 10 minutes of play. After the Gray Wolves built their lead up to 14 points, Angstmann sank two 3s late in the first half as DC cut the lead down to 11 before the half.
The second half started as the opposite of the first with both teams trading buckets. The Yellow Jackets scored 20 points in just under 10 minutes, which matched their entire first half. After Jalen Brown scored six straight for Defiance and Angstmann knocked down a pair of 3s, they managed to cut the lead down to seven points with momentum and nine minutes on the clock.
THE TURNING POINT
With the score at 53-46 in favor of the Gray Wolves, Lourdes went on their biggest tear of the night with a 19-2 run that lasted 5:40. This late burst in the game put the game out of reach. Shaunn Monroe, the nation's leading scorer in the NAIA entering play, was the driving force behind this run and scored 14 of the Gray Wolves's 19.
