Vanderpool takes the reins of the Defiance eSports program
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College eSports team will now be under the leadership of new head coach Michael Vanderpool, the DC Athletic Department announced on Tuesday.
While new to overseeing Defiance eSports, Vanderpool is no stranger to Defiance College and has served as an assistant professor of design since 2024. He previously served in a similar role at Northwest State Community College for seven years and was involved in starting their eSports program.
While at NSCC, Vanderpool oversaw the design and build of the gaming space as the program launched. He helped develop and produce Game Con in 2019, which continues to bring gamers and creatives to Northwest Ohio through popular video games, virtual reality experiences, LEGO collections and more. He is also currently organizing the Starfight 2025 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament in Downtown Toledo.
Vanderpool has a vision for DC eSports that extends beyond the competitive arena with a desire to see each student make real-world connections through their experience on the eSports team.
"I couldn't be more excited to take on this role and help build something incredible for our students," says Vanderpool. "Esports is so much more than just playing games. It's a launchpad for real-world skills and career development. Being part of an esports program means learning how to work as a team under pressure, developing leadership skills, and mastering communication in high-stakes situations. But it doesn't stop there. Our students will also get hands-on experience in event management, content creation, marketing, live streaming, media production, and strategic development. These are skills that translate directly into industries like sports management, broadcasting, design, and business."
The eSports team returns to action this fall for its eighth season of competition dating back to 2018-19.
