ROCKFORD, Mich. - Defiance College baseball completed its WHAC weekend road trip with a pair of losses on Sunday to the Aquinas Saints, 6-5 and 8-2, at Meijer Sports Complex.
The Yellow Jackets (9-18, 2-4 WHAC) were led on the day by Anthony Silvera Jr. (5-for-8, BB, 3 R) and Logan Rosenberger (6-for-8, 2 RBI). The Saints (12-13, 7-1 WHAC) ran their winning streak to 7 in a row to claim first place in the WHAC standings through two weekends of play.
Game 1 - Aquinas 6, Defiance 5
Defiance overcame a 3-0 deficit to lead 5-3 and led by one run entering the bottom of the seventh, but the Saints walked off DC to start Sunday's action. The Jackets' offense picked up starting pitcher Bradyn Shaw after Aquinas posted 3 runs through the first two innings, starting with an RBI double by Hayden Kanagy and an RBI groundout from Connor Gephart to shave the deficit to one run during the third. Logan Rosenberger delivered 4 base hits in the contest that included a game-tying RBI knock in the fourth and another run-scoring single in the sixth, which came after Shaw laid down a squeeze bunt to give DC the lead. Aquinas scored a crucial run in the home half of the sixth and tied the contest in the seventh due to an error on a stolen base attempt. The Saints captured the win on a walk-off win moments later with a bunt single.
Game 2- Aquinas 8, Defiance 2
The Yellow Jackets struck early with Connor Gephart's 2-out, RBI double in the first while Brez Zipfel posted a pair of zeroes in the start on the bump. The Saints gained the lead with 2 runs in the third on a pair of singles, a first-and-third double steal and a wild pitch. Zipfel held the Saints to 2 runs across 4 innings of work, working around 3 walks and 4 hits. The Aquinas led well to 5-1 after a 3-run fifth and they added 3 more in the eighth. DC's Hayden Kanagy was called to pinch hit in the ninth and slugged his team-leading third home run to start the inning.
