GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Defiance Yellow Jackets baseball team swept the Bob Jones Bruins on Tuesday, 5-3 and 6-1, to reach 300 career wins for head coach Shane Gardner.
The two victories pushed DC's record to 7-14 and four wins in a row, matching the longest streak for the Jackets over the last three seasons under Gardner. In addition to Gardner's 31 wins at DC, he accumulated 214 at his alma mater Hiwassee and 55 at Trinity International before coming to Defiance.
Game 1 - Defiance 5, Bob Jones 3
Jack Brubaker-Flood's second-inning grand slam boosted the Yellow Jackets in the first contest. DC loaded the bases with no outs on singles by Hayden Kanagy and Jayden Stechschulte around Anthony Silvera Jr. being hit by a pitch. Then with a 2-1 count, Brubaker-Flood pummeled his third homer of the season to clear the bases and give DC the lead. Gabriel Kelly started the contest on the hill for the Jackets and 5 walks led to a pair of Bruins runs in the third. Dillon Johnson took over to escape the inning and went on to a scoreless fourth. Brez Zipfel worked a 1-2-3 fifth before surrendering a solo homer in the sixth. In the previous inning, DC's Caleb Wurster capped off a 3-hit game with a solo home run of his own. Andy Yoder was turned to in the bottom of the seventh and closed out his third save of the year despite a hit batter to start the final frame.
Game 2 - Defiance 6, Bob Jones 1
Defiance earned its second doubleheader sweep in a row behind a strong pitching effort by Aiden Behrman. He tossed a complete-game win of 7 innings and held the Bruins to 1 run on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts. Bob Jones took a 1-0 lead in the first but DC rallied in the next turn to the plate. Bradyn Shaw legged out a triple with the bases loaded to push the Jackets in front 3-1. Defiance tacked on two more in the third on Jimmy Steakley's two-run single. Kolbe VanderLeest completed his 2-hit game with an RBI single in the seventh inning to pad the Jackets' lead.
