DC hosts Special Olympics Unified Skills Day with Cleveland Cavaliers
DEFIANCE, Ohio - Defiance College welcomed Special Olympics of Ohio and the Cleveland Cavaliers Cavs Academy to the George M. Smart Center on Tuesday morning for a Unified Skills Day as students from around Northwest Ohio inclusively engaged around the game of basketball.
Elementary, middle, and high school students from five different school districts in the region were present with over 200 total participants. Students were led through basketball skills stations by Cavs Academy youth coaches and also interacted with DC student-athletes. Stations throughout the Smart Center focused on dribbling, passing, shooting, and mobility in addition to sensory stations, crafts, and eSports that included the latest NBA video game.
The partnership between Defiance College Athletics and Special Olympics of Ohio extends to a number of inclusive sports events, including hosting Unified Basketball Games on DC's campus at the Karl H. Weaner Center. The next opportunity will be held on Sunday, March 29, beginning at noon.
