Singles Success Leads to Victory in HCAC Contest

NORTH MANCHESTER, IN - The Defiance College women's tennis team made the trip to Manchester University on Thursday evening. A strong showing allowed the Yellow Jackets to pick up their first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory of the 2018 season by way of a 6-3 scoreline.

Doubles action allowed the hosts to get off to a good start, winning two of the three matches. Number one doubles did not disappoint as the sides battled to the wire. The Defiance pairing of Hannah Hesterman (Archbold / Archbold) and Cayla Walker (Archbold / Archbold) fought to win 8 games in the contest before dropping the match 9-8 to Manchester's Eichenauer and Brettnacher. The number two pairing of A.J. Breneman (Bryan / Bryan) and Chelsey Braunwart (Trenton / Edgewood) earned the loan doubles victory for the Purple and Gold, earning the win 8-4. To wrap up doubles contests, Sydney Huston (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence) and Alexa St. Julian (Oregon / Clay) fell by a final of 8-3.

The singles side of action proved key for the Yellow Jacket's success as the visitors earned five of the possible six victories. Hesterman crusied to a 6-2, 6-2 victory in number one singles. Likewise, Breneman and Walker earned 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1 victories for the Purple and Gold. In number four singles, a close contest between Huston and Manchester's Brazo was abandoned in the second set, giving Huston the 6-4, 6-6 (5-1) win. Braunwart had a close contest in number five singles, earning the win by a final of 6-3, 6-4. The loan Spartan singles victory came in the number six slot as Defiance's Rylea Amspaugh (Nashport / Lakewood) fell in a three set contest 7-6, 4-6, 6-10.

Head Coach Gonzalo Vivas attested to the Yellow Jacket performance after the match stating, "I'm very proud of how hard our players fought on every match today."
