NICHOLASVILLE, KY. -- The Defiance College women's golf team put up their best performance of the 2017 season at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Preview at Keene Trace Golf Club this weekend.
As a team, the Yellow Jackets shot 391 strokes in Saturday's opening round and followed that up on Sunday with a season-best score of 383 for a two-day total of 774, which is also the best 36-hole team score for the young Yellow Jacket squad this season. That was good enough for 12th place out of 14 teams, as DC defeated Earlham (Ind.) College and Spalding (Mich.) University.
Individually, freshman Brittany Rinehart (Mannington, W.Va/North Marion) led the Yellow Jackets as she shot a 36-hole score of 173, shooting an 88 on day one and an 85 on day two to place 32nd overall. Senior Kristin Aslanian (Trenton, Mich.) bounced back from a 92 on Saturday to shoot an 83 on Sunday for a two-day total of 175, good enough for 36th in the tournament.
Freshman Emily Sabsook (Charlevoix, Mich.) shot back-to-back 97s to finish with a 36-hole total of 194 strokes, finishing in a tie for 65th place overall. Wrapping up the field for DC was Cassidy Yant (Churubusco, Ind.), who shot her two best rounds of the season, shooting a 114 on Saturday and a 118 on Sunday to finish in 77th place with 232 strokes.
The University of Texas-Dallas won the invitational title, with Centre (Ky.) College and Transylvania rounding out the top three. Centre's Alison Miller shot a pair of 74s to shoot a four-over 148 for the tournament to bring home medalist honors.
The Yellow Jacket golfers look to continue their improvement as they make a trip to Forest Hills Country Club in Richmond, Ind. for the Earlham Invitational. The tournament will tee-off at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30 and will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 9:30 a.m.
