Baseball Sees High Scoring Saturday Split

KENOSHA, WISC. - The Defiance College baseball team returned to action Saturday afternoon as they made the trip north to take on Carthage College in double header action. A pair of high scoring contests saw Defiance split the two game series with a 13-10 win followed by 14-1 defeat.

The strong offensive performance in the first game was started with a double to left center from Garrett Sierra (Defiance / Defiance). The senior later scored in the first inning to give the Yellow Jackets the 1-0 lead in the top of the inning.

DC returned to the plate with powerful hitting in the second inning, knocking in three more runs. Troy Konwinski (Allen Park, Mich. / Allen Park) singled into right field, his first two RBI of his five RBI performance.

After Carthage evened the contest in the bottom of the third, the Purple and Gold posted a stellar top of the fourth. Grant Vickery (Bellevue / Bellevue) kicked off the strong inning with a double before Sierra brought home the leading run. Konwinski continued his strong day with a three RBI double before Tanner Stippich (Lima / Allen East) brought the senior home. Vickery finished the inning by bringing Stippich home, extending the Yellow Jacket lead to 10-4.

After two more runs from the Yellow Jackets in the fifth, Carthage looked to mount a comeback. The Red Men tallied six more runs in the contest to bring the final score to 13-10.

From the mound, Daniel Tomalak (Tecumseh, Mich. / Clinton) threw his way to his first win of the season. The sophomore pitched three innings, allowing just two hits, no runs, and two strike outs in the outing. Jack Powell (Commerce Twp., Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) grabbed his second save of the 2019 campaign, after taking over on the mound late in the ninth inning.

A seven inning game two saw Carthage rally to even the series in Wisconsin. Michael Gilliland (Napoleon / Napoleon) tallied the lone hit for DC in the contest.

The Saturday split brings the Defiance baseball record to 9-4-1. Defiance will return to action Wednesday, March 27th when they travel to Heidelberg. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
